Scrappy Completes Journey Helping Others

Once upon a time, there was a dinosaur named Scrappy.  Scrappy was a Tyrannosaurus Rex, constructed from
recycled farm equipment parts.   As his designer carefully assembled the final bone into place, Scrappy seemed to come alive
And quickly became the talk of the neighborhood.  Scrappy loved being the center of attention but he still felt like something was missing.

One late summer afternoon, Scrappy said goodbye to his barnyard friends and ambled on down the dusty road searching for
something more.  During his journey, Scrappy couldn't help but notice so many moms and dads out of work and struggling to feed their families.
After days of travel, a tired and hungry Scrappy came upon a cornfield maze, with friendly people all around.  Feeling welcome there, Scrappy
decided to stay a while, at least until he was fattened up to continue his quest.

Each weekend as visitors approached the maze entrance, Scrappy would stand near the gate asking for food with an Earth-shaking
reptile "ROAAAR"!  Much to Scrappy's amazement, at the end of each day his food bowl was heaping full, with more than enough food to feed
five dinosaurs twice his size!  That's when Scrappy came upon a clever idea to stomp out hunger.  For the remainder of the season, Scrappy gave
all the food he couldn't eat to local families falling on hard times.  By the end of the season, 272 nonperishable food items had been donated to
local food pantries and $350 in cash had been given for the Thumb Breadbasket to buy food for families in need.  Almost magically, by the simple
act of giving, that once-empty space deep within Scrappy's rib cage didn't feel so empty anymore.  At last, Scrappy was truly happy!

But wait... the story doesn't end there!  In early November, Scrappy was auctioned on eBay and sold for $2000.00 to Pamela Deering of Bad Axe.
Pamela bid on Scrappy as a surprise Christmas gift for her husband Bryan, and much to her surprise she won the auction!  The Deerings own
and operate D&W Salvage in Bad Axe, which will (quite appropriately) be Scrappy's permanent home in the Thumb. According to the
auction preconditions, 50% of the proceeds were given directly to the buyer's favorite charity.  The Deerings chose to
support the National Marfan Foundation.

Marfan Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder of the connective tissue, which affects the skeletal system and other organs of the body.  It's
estimated that up to 200,000 Americans have Marfan Syndrome.  3 out of 4 people who have Marfan Syndrome inherit the mutation
from a parent, and an individual with Marfan Syndrome has a 50/50 chance of passing the mutation on each time they have a child.
Currently, there is no cure for Marfan Syndrome.  Founded in 1981, the National Marfan Foundation is a non-profit volunteer
organization dedicated to saving lives and improving the quality of life those affected by this and other related disorders.

As for Scrappy, he'll be reassembled this coming spring at D&W Salvage in Bad Axe.  If you happen to be driving by,
you just might catch a glimpse of him standing tall and proud guarding the scrap yard gates, where
he'll surely feel right at home!

Depner's Corn Maze would like to thank Robert Lefief, Scrappy's creator, and the many folks like
the Deerings who gave so generously to help others in need.  Web links and
